Smoky shared his memory of these photos in 2020. He said that he wanted to make his Scout as light as possible and pulled off the doors and hardtop.. Upon seeing this the IH factory team and their professional driver ended up doing the same thing. After the first days runs were completed Smoky had front end issues and since it was a new vehicle he asked IH to fix it which they said no it had been abused. After placing a for sale on the Scout IH picked it up and fixed it at no cost overnight and he was able to compete on the following day!
