Thursday July 16th
Trail Leader: Phil & Trey
Storm Mountain, Cedar Park Road, Bear Gulch (Possibly Foggy Park & Storm Drain)
Round Trip 65 miles – estimated driving time 6.5 hours. Lunch and photo ops stops may add 2 hours.
Meet at Phil’s hotel parking lot (Ridgeline Quality Inn 101 S. St. Vrain) @ 9:00am (or other agreed to starting time)
Just off US 43/34 East of Estes Park near Drake Colorado
13 miles on paved highway to the start of Cedar Park Trail.
Cedar Park is the 7 mile route up the mountain to the “real” trails. Appears to be more of a residential road?
Turn Right on forest rail named Foggy Park road and proceed east about 9 miles to the edge of the Roosevelt National Forest. Will travel thru a burn area near eastern border. Turn around and return to Cedar Park road entrance, using a small loop as part of the return road near the turnaround area.
At the Cedar Park entrance continue straight continuing to the Storm Mountain Peak (or as close as we will get to it.) Shortly after passing the Cedar Park Entrance there is a rocky area known as Galuchie Rock that is the most difficult section for the day. The Trails Off Road writeup indicate stock 4WD pickups may not make it thru without undercarriage damage.
On the return from the Storm Mountain peak is an optional northwesterly trail that offers and overview of Estes Park. Foggy Park is about one hour out and back and offer dense forest with possible wildlife sightings.
The final diversion is “Storm Drain.” It is 1 mile down the mountain and then return.
There is a 3 mile return to Cedar Park Road for the trip down the mountain to Drake and then returning to Estes Park.
Phil has also offered to take us to his favorite icecream place!
